Live

I first saw Babes in Toyland in (I think) 1991. Around there. My friend Gypsy and I snuck our way into the Khyber Pass. It was probably my first packed to the gills bar show since I wasn’t 21 yet. All sweat and fun.

I really want Babes in Toyland to come to Pittsburgh. They have such great energy and they don’t seem to have missed a beat here.

Though These Arms are Snakes broke up quite a few years ago, now, I’ll always remember them as 1.) owning one of my favorite guitar tones of all time, and 2.) being the band I saw at just the right time in my life when a raucous, nihilistic live show seemed like the perfect form of therapy for my young adult angst. I still remember driving to Cleveland with my friend Nina to go see them and watching a crowd member get clocked in the head by a ladder that vocalist Steve Snere dug out of who-knows-where backstage. Keep reading after the jump for a look at how rowdy they could get when playing in front of a sizable crowd.

***An additional note for those of you that may have found your way to the blog over the weekend: Our weekly radio show is on tonight from 9PM – 12AM EST. Tune in to hear what Jim and I sound like when we’re sober/slightly more rational. 88.3FM if you’re in Pittsburgh, and streaming at www.wrct.org everywhere else in the world.***

Dum Dum Girls’ re-imagining of Lee Hazlewood’s “Think I’m Coming Down” was always the moody, epic outlier on Only in Dreams, an album of otherwise shambolic 60’s girl-group pop. That moodiness lends itself quite well to a live setting, as you’ll see when the band knocks it out of the park in the video above.
A short but charming one for you this week: Dave Davison does a solo take on his band’s “The Ongoing Horrible” and crams a lot of interesting guitar work into a two minute video.

Radio shower commences in 3 hours. 9pm to midnight. 88.3FM in Pittsburgh. WRCT.org to stream.

Here is some live cardiel to get you pumped up! Every Sunday we’ll be posting live songs/shows to warm everyone up for the radio.

New feature here on the blog, we’re gonna try to focus on live videos every Sunday to get things ramped up for the radio show. So here goes: let Widowspeak lull you into a blissful state of euphoria with a live rendition of “Gun Shy”, and then tune into WRCT (www.wrct.org) at 9PM tonight so Jim and I can finish the job and put you completely to sleep.
