Deerhunter – Snakeskin

Deerhunter just announced a new album, Fading Frontier, that’ll be out 10/16 on 4AD. I don’t think I need to tell you how excited this makes me. Along with the usual Deerhunter awesomeness, this one features contributions from Broadcast’s James Cargill and Stereolab’s Tim Gane.
The first single from Fading Frontier is “Snakeskin”, which builds on the back of a skittery, damn near danceable rhythm. The chord progressions and outro are still noticeably Deerhunter, though, and now the countdown to October officially begins.

Welcome to another edition of the Interstellar Radio Shower Week in Review. Here in we pick the favorite song posted by the other (ie. Jim picks his favorite Matt song, and Matt his favorite Jim song) and we say why it’s our fav. Also, quick summaries of our other long posts for the week. Basically, herein we navel gaze.

Matt Picks a Jim Song 

All due respect to the rest of Jim’s songs this week, but the Disco Doom song that went up is absolutely wonderful.

If you’d prefer to do some navel-gazing instead, I’d recommend the Old Smokey post, which probably would’ve taken my top spot on a good majority of weeks.

Jim Picks a Matt Song

You can’t miss with Ezra Furman. I really liked New Fries. But who can argue with a pink shiny ultrablast? This song is quite large in substance. Really love the shoegazy aspects of it.

INTERNATIONAL RADIO SHOWER – Greece Edition Part III (post rock)

Each month, in the International Radio Shower, we will explore interesting (to us) music from around the world. This feature publishes every Friday. This month will focus on music in Greece. Click on the following links to read Part I: Nefeli Walking Undercover and Part II: εἰρκτή compilation.

In my limited sample of music I combed through, I found a large amount of post rock, much of which could be classified as math rock. I tend to like this genre of music, so I found a lot of interest to me. Here are a couple highlights.

Afformance

First of all, I appreciate a good band name. Afformance works for me. It is a made up word with meaning behind it. And let’s face it, virtually all math rock is quite a bit emo and a touch intelligentsia. This actually has some similarities to Pittsburgh’s own My Captain, My Sea.

Hope Thinks Infinite

Well, this band’s label is so very literal. They deliver a great brand of instrumental post-rock. Thousand Yard Stare is a phenomenal song. And Glacial Erratic is a great song title. Petrichor goes primarily ambient or something.

We Own the Sky

Again, literal in a name. This one a little more aggressive about it. And a lot more heavy metal influenced. I recommend Alterecho.
